Etne is renowned for its varied cultural history. In the Middle Ages Stødle was the seat of King Magnus Erlingsson. Although crowned when only five years old, King Magnus lived a short life, falling in battle at the age of twenty-eight. It was King Magnus’s father, Earl Erling Skakke who in 1160 commissioned his own private chapel which became Stødle Church. Near the church is a burial mound and ring formations, evidence that Etne was an important site during the Bronze Age.

Traces of early history are also to be found elsewhere in Etne. The Bruteig Stones in Stordalen have become one of western Norway’s most important archaeological sites.

Examples of the more recent past are also plentiful in Etne. Gjerde Church, Sæbøtunet Hamlet and the Post Road between Etne and Skånevik are but a few.

The village of Skånevik is best known for its timber framed buildings and decorative shop fronts. It comes as no surprise to anyone that Skånevik is often referred to as the “Pearl of Sunnhordland”. Fjords, waterfalls, mountains and lakes are all only a short distance away.
Etne: Coastline: 130 km - Area 708 km² - Inhabitants 4 000

Fugl Fønix Accommodation Services:

Car Rental
Corresponding buses operate between Haugesund and Etne.
Rent a hired car - click here

How to get there?
Getting to Etne is quite easy by bus from the bus terminus in Haugesund. Etne is served by both local and express lines.

You can take the airport-bus directly to the terminus in Haugesund and then wait for the next bus to Odda or the Haukeliexpress.

Check out the bus routes by clicking “Transport” on the menu.

Things to do?

Sæbøtunet Rural Museum in Etne.

Langfoss - one of the regions largest waterfalls - 20 minutes from Etne.

Historical routes - old churches, carved stones etc.

Hiking trails in the Etne Mountains.

Experience the Cultural Heritage of a fjord landscape inaccessible by road

The tour starts at Teigland with a short boat journey to the sunny side of the Åkrafjord, to an old farm at Kvandal. From here walkers meander their way along an old school trail which passes small settlements and provides spectacular views of Åkrafjord. As you walk, your guide will tell you about the unique fl ora and fauna of the region, and the local history. We visit a bridge built for vehicular traffi c in 1962 before funding dried up leaving it to stand as a lonely symbol of a dream about a road on this side of the fjord. There is plenty of time for conversation, great food and friendship along the way.

Small backpacks with lunch are provided. Lunch consists of tasty locally produced cured meats, fruit and water. The terrain is varied and some times steep, intended for those whose physical contition is average. 2-3 hours walking.

Duration: approximately 4 hours.
Prices NOK 475, all inclusive.
Saturdays - July and August 2008.

A fantastic great outdoors experience with a pack trip by horse through beautiful
mountainous landscape.

Taking the road from the hamlet of Åkra, the trip commences on a track hundreds of years old that leads to a mountain farm. Through varied and often steep terrain, the track winds towards Åkra Mountain Farm situated some 600 metres above sea level. After passing Ingaskar Summit we stop to try our luck fi shing in Lake Ingavatnet. Continuing on, we trek in the direction of some lakes where we make camp for the night. The next day, following a hearty breakfast we journey towards Sandvasshorga Summit (1163 MSL) where there are som stunning views to be had. It is also very interesting to observe how the horses work their way over the mountains. The trek continues through undulating landscape up to Avaldsnuten Summit (1245 MSL). Here, the view can only be described as formidable: Folgefonna Glacier, Hardangervidda Plateau, Kvinnherad Mountains, Eikemo, Etnefjella Mountains, and Åkra Fjord with a panorama view of Langfoss Waterfall - one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Norway. We then wander down to Vetrehusvatna Lake and continue down through Skredalen Valley to Vetrehus, an active mountain goat farm. At this stage we are now down to approximately 400 MSL and we can take the roadway that runs to the sea. We cross the fjord by boat and arrive back at Åkra.

July 3th-4th

July 10th-11th
